Undertrial in Punjab posts prison brawl video on FB

CHANDIGARH: A murder accused lodged in Punjab’s Kapurthala jail has uploaded on the internet a 10-minute gory video clip of brutally thrashing an inmate inside the prison , exposing the much-criticized callousness of Punjab jail officials in allowing drugs and expensive communication devices inside the jails.

The video was uploaded on October 26 on his Facebook account by Sukha Kahlon, who is facing 25 charges of heinous crimes including murder and extortion in Punjab. The video shows Kahlon and other inmates battering another prison-mate Jimmy to an unconscious state. Punjab jail officials denied that there were security breaches at the prison.

They, however, said Kahlon was already shifted to a high security jail in Nabha on Saturday, the same day when the video was uploaded. “This undertrial was only a day before shifted from Kapurthala jail to Nabha jail after there were reports that he had misbehaved with the jail officials. It is not possible for him to upload pictures or video through cell phone or other devices from the jail but we are trying to ascertain it,” ADGP (prisons ) RK Meena told TOI.

The video has added a fresh row to the claims made by Punjab’s former director general of police (DGP, prisons ) Shashi Kant, who had filed a PIL on drug mafia in jails before the Punjab and Haryana high court in September.
