The Sunny Deol starrer, ‘Singh Sahib-The Great’, which was released on Friday, will now be screened across the country as, ‘Singh Saab–The Great’.
The Akal Takht had raised objections to the title, ‘Singh Sahib’ on the grounds that it violated the Sikh ‘maryada’ (traditions), as the word ‘Sahib’ could only be used for the Jathedar’s of the five Sikh Takhts and for members of the Sikh clergy, occupying important positions in historical gurdwaras.
“We have received a message from the film’s producers informing us that the movie will now be screened as ‘Singh Saab’. The use of the title ‘Sahib’ violated the ‘maryada’, as this title is reserved only for a selected few”, said Giani Gurbachan Singh while addressing the media after presiding over a meeting of the Sikh clergy here on Friday.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandik Committee (SGPC) had been asked by the Jathedar to take up this issue with the film’s producers. The Jathedar had been approached by various Sikh groups who raised objections to the use of the word, ‘Sahib’ in the film.
All posters and promos would not carry the changes with the producers ensuring that the word is not used.
